Buru Isaac Mohlabane is Creative Artistic Director and Co-Director of Via Katlehong Dance. He was born in 1983 in Johannesburg, in the Katlehong Township, and raised by a single mother. From an early age he involved himself in many different activities in his community participating in club soccer and school athletics. In 1996 he joined the company Via Katlehong Dance to learn the dance discipline and began performing in 1997. Soon after his exposure to the possibilities of dance, he started to take dance seriously as a career. In 1999 he got an opportunity to perform at the All Africa Games opening and closing ceremonies. He then went on to perform in different cooperate events around South Africa and Europe. He has performed extensively internationally in prestigious events in New York, California, UK, Belgium, Amsterdam, France, Ireland, German, Italy, Luxemburg, Greece, , Spain, Sweden, Holland and 10 West African countries.
He has danced, choregraphed and directed for Via Katlehong’s own productions which have toured internationally including the much acclaimed Sophiatown, Toyi-Toyi and currently Via Kanana.
Mohlabane is heavily invested in developing the next generation of Via Katlehong dancers, grooming and training young dance talent from his own community of Katlehong and other areas of Gauteng, South Africa. He also co-runs the Via Katlehong Community Dance School from the Katlehong Arts Centre and participates in local outreach programs partnering with other organisations dedicated towards uplifting the disadvantaged youth within South African townships.
