There’s a new star shining in Italian dance firmament! Sofia Nappi offers us a soulful and healing quintet, an enticement to drop the masks and embrace the present moment.
A current sensation on the European scene, Sofia Nappi has made a dazzling debut, winning commissions and awards at a dizzying pace. The works of this young Italian choreographer and dancer, who trained at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in New York, reflect two fundamental influences: the gaga technique of choreographer Ohad Naharin, and the work of Hofesh Shechter. Premiered at the Venice Biennale during the pandemic, IMA is Japanese for “the present moment” and Hebrew for “mother,” associated with rebirth and renewal. Contrasting theatre and dance, past and present, old age and youth, nostalgia and exuberance, IMA invites us to join the great dance of life. Comforting.
Sofia Nappi is an international-renowned choreographer and dancer from Italy. She graduated from the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in New York before deepening her studies abroad. Her close proximity to the Hofesh Shecter Dance Company and her studies of Gaga, language of famous choreographer Ohad Naharin, are a fundamental part of her dance background.
