Theatre of Dreams
Hofesh Shechter
Show
2025/2026

High voltage

Acclaimed time and again by Danse Danse audiences, Hofesh Shechter and his formidable tribe take us on a dizzying dive, headfirst, into a fantasy world where dreams and reality collide. Quite an event!

Warning: Includes loud music, haze and a brief scene of nudity.

Hofesh Shechter has been shaking up the dance world for over twenty years with his powerful, visceral works. His latest creation catapults his inimitable dancers into the realm of imagination and the subconscious. What is the strange stuff our illusions are made of? Curtains open and close, revealing scenes of spellbinding surrealism. Theatre of Dreams explores the territory of the in between. Bodies unleashed, between dreams and chimeras, revealing fears, hopes, desires and a myriad of emotions that penetrate not only the dreaming mind but also our waking thoughts. To a percussive soundtrack by Shechter himself, performed live by three musicians, the dance pulses, feverish and wild, under lights sculpted by his long-time collaborator Tom Visser. A dreamlike journey from chaos to beauty.

A Word from Danse Danse

Good evening everyone,

We are delighted to once again welcome Hofesh Shechter Company, arriving straight from London to present Theatre of Dreams. Danse Danse is especially proud to be co-producing this work and to continue nurturing a meaningful artistic connection with this dance company that has won the hearts of Montreal audiences with every visit.

Since its first performances at Danse Danse, the visceral style of choreographer Hofesh Shechter has left a lasting impression. A rare feat in the dance world, he composes the music for his own works—shaping both movement and sound with the same raw intensity. His art emerges as a total, sensory, and hypnotic experience.

Theatre of Dreams leads us into a realm of fantasy and imagination. The contrasts are striking: chaos and beauty, tension and softness, dreamlike visions and jolts of reality. True to form, Hofesh Shechter crafts scenes that move us, shake us, and take us by surprise.

Enjoy the performance!

Pierre Des Marais — Artistic and Executive Director of Danse Danse.

About the Work

Hofesh Shechter’s new evening will take audiences on a wild headfirst dive into the theatre of dreams. This work will delve deep into the world of fantasy and the subconscious, revealing fears, hopes, desires and a myriad of emotions that penetrate not only our dreams but also our waking thoughts – the mind is king. The dancers’ bodies will bring to life on stage this interplay between poetry and reality, accompanied by a small band of musicians playing live to the backdrop of Shechter’s trademark cinematic sound-score. Hofesh will reunite with lighting designer, Tom Visser and costume designer, Osnat Kelner to create a powerful, sculptured setting to this dreamscape.
