RUBBERBAND

RUBBERBAND has developed forms that deconstruct the principles of urban dance and explore the rebellious aspect of hip hop and the richness of narrative movement.

Founded in 2002 by Victor Quijada, RUBBERBAND quickly established itself in Canada and abroad as a unique company. From the beginning, RUBBERBAND has developed forms that deconstruct the principles of urban dance with such works as Reflections on Movement Particles and Elastic Perspective, which explore the rebellious aspect of hip hop and the richness of narrative movement.

In 2004, Usine C welcomed RUBBERBAND as its resident company. Its piece Slicing Static was hailed as Best Dance Production of 2004 by The Hour, Montreal’s weekly cultural newspaper (now Cult MTL). The following year, Anne Plamondon joined RUBBERBAND as co-artistic director, a position she held until 2015.

From 2007 to 2011, RUBBERBAND was in residence at the Cinquième Salle at Place des Arts. Four works—Punto Ciego (2008), AV Input/Output (2008), Loan Sharking (2009) and Gravity of Center (2011)—premiered there, and the company gave nearly 40 performances a year. At the same time, the company supported the next generation of artists through such projects as the Post-Hip Hop Project, which allowed some 20 emerging hip hop artists to have their first experience of creation and presentation in a professional setting.

RUBBERBAND has performed in the United States, Canada, Holland, Belgium and England, as well as in Japan, where it represented Canada at the 2005 World Expo. The company recently mounted local and international tours of Vic’s Mix and City Thread, an outdoor ambulatory piece for 40 dancers, and of Vraiment doucement, which features an ensemble of 10 dancers and 2 musicians.
