Cayetano Soto is a bold and innovative choreographer. A unique voice in modern ballet, his complex pieces shift between shadows and light, stunning audiences with immersive and cinematic on-stage worlds. The styles he employs cover a wide spectrum, result in hypnotic, often brutal, duets featuring daring, angular lifts that dissolve with breathtaking speed into paradoxes or simply melt away. Cayetano Soto not only creates ballets but also designs the lighting, costumes, and sets for them.

His work is characterized by poetic, eccentric, and often ironic imagery. In Canela Fina he sent his dancers through floating clouds of cinnamon, in Adastra it rains gold. In his version of L‘après-midi d’un Faune, the dancers interact in a white vertical garden.

Soto studied dance in his hometown of Barcelona and at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. He danced with IT Dansa Barcelona and subsequently with the Munich Ballet Theater, where he began to choreograph in 2002. His first piece, Fugaz, has since been included in the repertoires of 13 companies.

In 2005, he became an independent artist. Since then, he has received commissions from many companies such as Nederlands Dans Theater, Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, Zurich Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, Ballet du Capitole de Toulouse, Balé da Cidade de São Paulo, Ballets Jazz Montréal, Introdans, Perm Opera and Ballet Theater, Ballet Hispanico New York, Luzerner Tanz Theater, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet as well as companies in Germany such as the state ballet companies in Wiesbaden, Dortmund, and Nuremberg. Soto held the position of resident choreographer with Ballet BC in Vancouver, Canada for three years. For Gauthier Dance, Soto has created Malasangre and Conrazoncorazon, which are now in the repertoires of seven ballet companies in Europe and North America.
