(LA)HORDE

Marine Brutti + Arthur Harel + Jonathan Debrouwer

Founded in 2013, (LA)HORDE brings together three artists: Marine Brutti, Jonathan Debrouwer and Arthur Harel. Dance is at the heart of their work and around it, the collective develops choreographic pieces, films, performances and installations.

With groups on the fringes of mainstream culture such as septuagenarians in Void Island, blind people in Night Owl, jumpers in To Da Bone and Georgian dancers from Ballet Iveroni in Marry Me In Bassiani, (LA)HORDE questions the political significance of dance and maps out the choreographic forms of popular uprising, whether they be massive or isolated, from raves to traditional dances to jumpstyle.

Their exploration of the new dynamics of circulation and representation of dance and the body that are developing online has led them to form the concept of ‘post-internet dance’. By diversifying its media, (LA)HORDE explores the almost infinite serendipity of this new territory, and offers multiple perspectives on the revolts of these communities, with which the collective works in a heterarchical way.

In 2019, (LA)HORDE took over the direction of the Ballet national de Marseille (BNM), which was founded in 1972 by Roland Petit and became a national choreographic centre (CCN) in 1984. Created with the artist Rone, Room With A View is their first choreographic work with the Ballet national de Marseille (BNM), now made up of twenty-three dancers of sixteen nationalities. The following year, together with the Ballet national de Marseille, they invited four choreographers for a mixed programme: Lucinda Childs, Tânia Carvalho, Lasseindra Ninja and Oona Doherty.

In 2022, together with the BNM, they presented Roommates, a programme of six short pieces featuring a host of contemporary works by Lucinda Childs, Claude Brumachon and Benjamin Lamarche, Peeping Tom, Cecilia Bengolea and François Chaignaud, (LA)HORDE, as well as a major dance exhibition, We Should Have Never Walked on the Moon, combining musical comedy and live action cinema with avant-garde choreography.

(LA)HORDE also directs films and performances: Novaciéries, 2015 ; Cloud Chasers, 2016 ; The Master’s Tools, 2017 ; Cultes, 2019 ; Room With A View, 2020 ; Ghosts, 2021.

They have also worked with Christine and the Queens, Rone, Spike Jonze, Sam Smith and Kim Petras, choreographing the video Unholy (Grammy Award 2023), and Madonna choreographing “Madonna: The Celebration Tour”.

Created in 2023 with the Ballet national de Marseille, Age of Content questions the relationship between bodies and emotions in the face of the abundance of content that characterises our contemporary world. In 2024, they choreographed I Want Absolute Beauty, Ivo Van Hove's new show with Sandra Hüller based on PJ Harvey's repertoire.

In addition to touring in France and abroad, (LA)HORDE is developing collaborations with the BNM in 2025 with Le Louvre (Deep Stream), with the Rambert School and Company in London (Bring Your Own; We Should Have Never Walked on the Moon), and is also preparing a new creation and a new shared programme for 2026.
