Continuing his role as resident choreographer with Danza Contemporánea de Cuba, George Céspedes maintains a dynamic international career marked by commissions and collaborations worldwide.
Born on November 29, 1979, in Holguín, Cuba, George Céspedes is a Cuban dancer and choreographer. He trained at the Elementary Dance School Raul Gomez Garcia in Holguín and graduated in 1997 as both dancer and professor of modern dance from the National Dance School in Havana. He also received a scholarship to attend the American Dance Festival (ADF) programme at Duke University, North Carolina (USA).
Principal dancer and resident choreographer of Danza Contemporánea de Cuba (DCC), he founded his own company, Los Hijos del Director, in 2013. His choreographic language—physical, architectural and rhythmically driven—has gained international recognition.
His works have been presented across Europe, North America and Australia, in prestigious venues such as Sadler’s Wells Theatre and the Royal Opera House in London, Teatro Real in Madrid, La Fenice in Venice, the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto and the Joyce Theater in New York.
Notable creations include Carmina Burana (2008), Mambo 3XXI (2009), El peso de una isla (2008, with Carlos Acosta), Requiem (2018), Polvo, sombras, palabras, nada (2022) and Sacre (2024). In 2025, he creates Ataraxia for São Paulo Dance Company and restages La Ecuación for Acosta Danza. His work has received several awards and nominations, including the Premio Luna in Mexico for Carmina Burana (2009), as well as nominations for the Laurence Olivier Award and the TMA Award in 2011 for Mambo 3XXI.
