Andonis Foniadakis

A choreographer whose virtuosic physical language unfolds a dance of striking rhythmic intensity, where raw power meets rigorous precision.

Born in Ierapetra, in southern Crete, Greece, Andonis Foniadakis trained at the National School of Dance in Athens before continuing his studies at Rudra Béjart Lausanne with the support of the prestigious Maria Callas Scholarship. As a performer with major companies such as Béjart Ballet Lausanne and the Ballet de l’Opéra de Lyon, he collaborated with leading international choreographers—from Maguy Marin to William Forsythe—building a rich and varied stage experience that directly informs his own choreographic voice.

From early on, Foniadakis developed a distinctive language, showcased through acclaimed creations for international companies and institutions. Among his landmark works are Les noces for the Ballet of Florence, as well as creations for the National Ballet of Greece, where he serves as resident choreographer. His practice also extends to theatre and opera, with projects such as Castor et Pollux at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and Les Boréades at Opéra national du Rhin, reflecting the breadth of his multidisciplinary approach. His work is presented by leading ballet companies and ensembles across Europe, North America, South America, Asia, and Australia, affirming a strong presence on the international choreographic scene.

Artistic Director of the National Ballet of Greece for the 2016–2017 season, he went on to curate the programming of subsequent seasons. He continues to pursue an international career while sharing his practice through workshops and teaching engagements in numerous institutions in Europe and beyond. Recipient of the Danza & Danza Award for Best Choreographer in 2012, Andonis Foniadakis continues to develop a demanding, powerful, and poetic choreographic writing that stands as a reference in contemporary Greek and international dance.
