Since 2005, more than 2500 youths have participated in the program.
Participants are teenagers aged 14 to 17, most often Grade 10 and Grade 11 high school students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Since 2008, participants have also come from youth centres.
Young people are recruited at schools targeted by the New Approaches, New Solutions intervention, a strategy aimed at improving the success of high school students from disadvantaged areas that was launched by the Ministère de l’Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport du Québec.
Often, they attend a contemporary dance performance for the very first time in their lives.

« J’AI VRAIMENT AIMÉ TOUTES LES CHORÉGRAPHIES. JE NE LES AI PAS TOUTES COMPRISES, MAIS LA GESTUELLE LES ÉMOTIONS, TOUT ÉTAIT PARFAIT ET QUAND JE REGARDAIS LES PIÈCES, J’ÉTAIS ÉBLOUIE. C’ÉTAIT VRAIMENT BEAU. MOI, C’ÉTAIT LA PREMIÈRE FOIS QUE J’ASSISTAIS À UN SPECTACLE DE DANSE À LA PLACE DES ARTS ET JE COMPTE VRAIMENT Y RETOURNER. » – NOUR
« DORÉNAVANT, JE NE VOIS PLUS LA DANSE MODERNE DU MÊME ŒIL. » – BARRY
“By supporting these choreographers at critical junctures in their careers, we hope to enhance the visibility and vitality of contemporary dance in Montreal. The artists we support are recognized not only locally but internationally, and are thus extraordinary artistic ambassadors for the city. It is our duty to support them more, and to allow the public to discover new facets of their talent.”Clothilde Cardinal & Pierre Des Marais, Co-directors of Danse Danse
The following choreographers have benefited from this program and have been presented by Danse Danse with their works: Natasha Bakht for White Space (2006), Hélène Blackburn (Cas Public) for Suites Cruelles (2008), José Navas (Compagnie Flak) for S (2009), Danièle Desnoyers (Carré des Lombes) for Dévorer le ciel (2010) and Myriam Allard/Hedi Graja from La Otra Orilla for El12 (2010).

"THE SEGAL CENTER RESIDENCY WAS A VERY IMPORTANT ASPECT IN THE EVOLUTION OF PERSONÆ. THE CHANCE TO WORK IN A BLACK BOX, WITHOUT THE PRESSURE OF A SHOW, WAS A PRIVILEGE, RARE IN THE DANCE WORLD. THE POST SHOWING DISCUSSION WAS ALSO A WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY TO ENGAGE WITH A NEW AUDIENCE AND LEARN MORE ABOUT THE WORK IN PROGRESS PRESENTED. THANKS TO THIS RESIDENCY I WAS ABLE TO TRY IDEAS ON STAGE AND DEVELOP A NEW RELATION WITH A NEW AUDIENCE. IN ALL, A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE." – JOSÉ NAVAS
« EN AYANT L'OPPORTUNITÉ D'AVOIR ACCÈS AU STUDIO/BOITE NOIRE DU CENTRE SEGAL, PENDANT 10 JOURS, 12 HEURES PAR JOUR, CETTE RÉSIDENCE DE CRÉATION M'A PERMIS D'OPTIMISER MON TEMPS DE CRÉATION AVEC TOUS LES COLLABORATEURS IMPLIQUÉS DANS D'EXCELLENTES CONDITIONS. CE FUT POUR MOI, UNE OCCASION UNIQUE DE TRAVAIL DE CRÉATION (…). LES COMMENTAIRES, LES ÉCHANGES AVEC LE PUBLIC ONT ÉTÉ PARTICULIÈREMENT PRÉCIEUX À CETTE ÉTAPE-CI DE CRÉATION. » – DOMINIQUE PORTE
“JUST A SMALL NOTE TO THANK YOU FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK IN RESIDENCE AT THE SEGAL CENTER. IT WAS TRULY A HUGE ASSISTANCE AND WITHOUT THIS TIME, IT WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE TO MAKE THE CHANGES I NEEDED TO ON THE PIECE AND TO PREPARE IT FOR PRESENTATION. I AM VERY HONORED TO HAVE BEEN A PART OF THIS PROJECT.” – CHANTI WADGE
“IT WAS SO INTERESTING TO ME TO HEAR THE PUBLIC'S OPINION. IT IS AMAZING WHAT THEY CAN SEE. IT ACTUALLY GAVE ME NEW WAYS AND ALSO REAFIRM OTHER WAYS ON MY OWN WAY OF WORKING AND LOOKING AT THINGS. ”– EDGAR ZENDEGAS
The Carte Blanche initiatives (co-production shares and residencies) are concretely ensuring the continued growth and vitality of this dynamic art form.
